A gorgeous setting all year round. You might have noticed the little orange breasted bird in the corner of the illustration. This little robin decided to join me while I was inking. Do not mistake him for American Robin that announces spring, because they are not even the same species. No, he is a European Robin. The robin came to be known for Christmas during Victorian times, because of his red breast. The Post men used to wear red uniforms and became known as Robin Redbreast, then shortened to Robin. Soon the robin was on Christmas cards, tree ornaments, and cartoons. The valerian-bearded bridge was built in 1320. This was considered to be one of the first toll bridges in Ireland. There have been castles on this site for over a 1000 years, originally to help enforce the toll collection. The Black Castle in the back ground was originally built in 1180. The town of Leighlinbridge is on both sides of the river, filled with lovely pubs and historic buildings. It along with River Suir and River Nore form a sisterhood of rivers, which all merge together to empty out in the Celtic Sea in Waterford. The river passes seven towns on its trip to the sea. The Barrow River is a key part of a transportation network that has been used for the last 100 years to ship goods to Dublin and away from the rich farmlands of Carlow, Wexford, and Waterford. Living here it was hard not to fall in love with this river. From its angry rapids in winter to the soft meandering of summer, it’s gorgeous all year long. This is my go to spot to get away from it all, relax, and just transport myself back in time. It’s not every day that you are given the keys to the castle, but that is exactly what the council did. I crawled through every inch of this place; from the top of the tower on a very dodgy stone spiral stair case to the tunnels connecting a gate house over a kilometer away. Ducketts Grove was originally build around 1830, by William Duckett. It was a massive estate in County Carlow. This place is loaded with an obscene amount of towers, chimneys, turrets, and statues. It has so many things going for it, historic castles, cathedrals, and bars. A lovely river flowing through it with massive amounts of parklands, and a thriving arts community. This view always caught my breath as I drove into the city to take my daughter to swim lessons. It captures everything I love about it in a sweeping panorama. Kilkenny is a medieval town dating back to 1609. Kilkenny Castle was built in 1195 by Norman occupiers. The has many well-preserved churches and monasteries, including imposing St. Canice’s Cathedral and the Black Abbey Dominican priory. Ireland has the most castles of all Europe for a pretty simple reason, tax breaks. The English government wanted to keep the Irish under control, so they gave tax breaks to lords who would build a castle to intimidate. That is why there are so many castles, some just really a stone tower to magnificent estates like Duckett’s Grove. The Black Castle was originally built in 1180. The ruin on the site today is reported to have been built by Sir Edward Bellingham, Lord Deputy of Ireland, in 1547. So after many visits, sitting in my car on the side of the road, I captured this pastoral scene of beauty. Art Galleries and museums all over Ireland had drawing events for everyone. My plan was to work on some art on the island of Skellig Michael in the ring of Kerry. Famous worldwide because of the latest Star Wars. Before that little movie there is over a 1000 years of history there. Unfortunately, I was unable to get on the island, due to adverse weather conditions. I was lucky that in the Ring of Kerry, there is always something beautiful to see. There was a small castle ruins on the ocean. A gorgeous setting all year round. You might have noticed the little orange breasted bird in the corner of the illustration. This little robin decided to join me while I was inking. Do not mistake him for American Robin that announces spring, because they are not even the same species. No, he is a European Robin. The robin came to be known for Christmas during Victorian times, because of his red breast. The Post men used to wear red uniforms and became known as Robin Redbreast, then shortened to Robin. Soon the robin was on Christmas cards, tree ornaments, and cartoons. The valerian-bearded bridge was built in 1320. This was considered to be one of the first toll bridges in Ireland. There have been castles on this site for over a 1000 years, originally to help enforce the toll collection. The Black Castle in the back ground was originally built in 1180. The town of Leighlinbridge is on both sides of the river, filled with lovely pubs and historic buildings. It along with River Suir and River Nore form a sisterhood of rivers, which all merge together to empty out in the Celtic Sea in Waterford. The river passes seven towns on its trip to the sea. The Barrow River is a key part of a transportation network that has been used for the last 100 years to ship goods to Dublin and away from the rich farmlands of Carlow, Wexford, and Waterford. Living here it was hard not to fall in love with this river. From its angry rapids in winter to the soft meandering of summer, it’s gorgeous all year long. This is my go to spot to get away from it all, relax, and just transport myself back in time. It’s not every day that you are given the keys to the castle, but that is exactly what the council did. I crawled through every inch of this place; from the top of the tower on a very dodgy stone spiral stair case to the tunnels connecting a gate house over a kilometer away. Ducketts Grove was originally build around 1830, by William Duckett. It was a massive estate in County Carlow. This place is loaded with an obscene amount of towers, chimneys, turrets, and statues. It has so many things going for it, historic castles, cathedrals, and bars. A lovely river flowing through it with massive amounts of parklands, and a thriving arts community. This view always caught my breath as I drove into the city to take my daughter to swim lessons. It captures everything I love about it in a sweeping panorama. Kilkenny is a medieval town dating back to 1609. Kilkenny Castle was built in 1195 by Norman occupiers. The has many well-preserved churches and monasteries, including imposing St. Canice’s Cathedral and the Black Abbey Dominican priory. Ireland has the most castles of all Europe for a pretty simple reason, tax breaks. The English government wanted to keep the Irish under control, so they gave tax breaks to lords who would build a castle to intimidate. That is why there are so many castles, some just really a stone tower to magnificent estates like Duckett’s Grove. The Black Castle was originally built in 1180. The ruin on the site today is reported to have been built by Sir Edward Bellingham, Lord Deputy of Ireland, in 1547. So after many visits, sitting in my car on the side of the road, I captured this pastoral scene of beauty.
